LOCALITY AND SOCIETY:
Challenges and Opportunities for
Rural Places in the New Millennium

The 64th annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society focuses attention on the role of localities in contemporary society.  The meeting will entertain the basic question of whether localities continue to be important sites of social, economic and political action as we enter the new millennium.  We will consider whether globalization has displaced the properties of localities; whether information technology might create local space in cyberspace; whether individuals will continue to answer the question "Who am I?" by answering "Where I am." Our multi-level approach to considering localities in contemporary society invites a consideration of relationships between global, national, and local levels of social organization, and focuses on the agency of people who live, work, and solve their daily problems in local communities.
