Strengthening Partnerships:
New Paths to Rural Prosperity
The innovation and added capacity for action that evolve from the synergy of partnerships are widely documented by social scientists. Within the community development area, for example, the most progressive and effective rural communities have collaboration and partnerships as core components of their community enhancement activities. In other areas, such as agriculture, natural resources, environment, education, workforce development, health services, and local government, the nurturing and strengthening of ties among people, organizations, or institutions create potent forces capable of tackling some of the most difficult challenges facing these sectors.
The 67th Annual Meeting of the Rural Sociological Society is designed to encourage and showcase:
- Innovative partnerships established across a host of settings that have promoted increased effectiveness and innovation with regard to research, policy, and outreach education activities;
- Critical discourse with respect to new paths for enhancing the long-term vitality of rural areas through collaborative efforts; and,
- The healthy exchange of ideas pertaining to the role of partnerships in advancing the viability of rural sociology as a discipline and professional organization in the years ahead.
We encourage our meeting participants to highlight research and applied activities that demonstrate the benefits and challenges associated with partnership building. And in the spirit of our 2004 theme, we urge RSS members to invite new partners to the RSS annual meeting, particularly those who share a commitment to the well being of rural people and places.
