Career Development Services
At the 2008 Annual Meeting

Sponsored by the RSS Membership Committee

1. Career Development Panel Sessions

At this year's meeting, we are currently planning two panel sessions.

Publishing Your Manuscript in a Professional Journal. The Editors of numerous publication outlets, journals and other practitioner journals, will share with you tips for success in publishing your manuscript. (Organized by Domenico "Mimmo" Parisi, Mississippi State University)

2. Vita Assistance Program

Back by popular demand! This service aims to help students develop an effective curriculum vita. Sign up for an half hour interview with a Professional member of RSS who will review your vita and give you suggestions on how to make it work better!

To sign up for the vita assistance service, fill out the "Vita Assistance" form and return to Domenico "Mimmo" Parisi (naomi.krogman@ualberta.ca) by July 15, 2008.

We will notify you via e-mail the time and advisor for your interview. Please bring three copies of your vita to the RSS Annual Meeting - one for you to look at and one for the faculty member to examine. You might want to bring an additional one "just in case" an opportunity arises.

3. "Meeting Mentor" Program for New Members

Again, back by popular demand! Did you just recently join RSS? And/or, would this year's meeting be your first Annual Meeting of the RSS you are attending? Let the Membership Committee help you find a "mentor" who has been a member for more than 5 years and will help you learn about the Society and meet other friendly members of RSS! We will also advertise in the RSS program an evening to go out to dinner with new members.

If you are interested in having a member of long standing within RSS as a "meeting mentor" at this year's Annual Meeting in Manchester, please fill out the "Wish to Have a Meeting Mentor" form and return to Gilbert Gillespie (gwg2@cornell.edu) by July 15, 2008.

If you have been a RSS member for more than 5 years and are interested in becoming a "mentor" for a new member at this year's Annual Meeting in Manchester, please fill out the "Want to be a Meeting Mentor" form and return to Gilbert Gillespie (gwg2@cornell.edu) by July 15, 2008.

We will attempt to match your interests to someone, based on the RSS Research and Interest Groups they belong to and their Areas of Competency (in our RSS membership database) and through our membership committee contacts. We will put you in touch with your meeting mentor ahead of the conference so that the two of you can meet when you arrive.

4. Job Notebook

There will be two notebook sets on a display table in the RSS registration area -- one with a collection of RSS student vitae (Candidate Book) and the other with a collection of jobs (Job Book) offered in departments with RSS faculty members. Whether you are looking for candidates for a position or looking for a job, please do not forget to take a look at them so that RSS Membership Committee can assist you in setting up informal job interviews at the Annual Meeting!

To have your CV included in these books, please submit a Word or PDF copy to Sarah Frank (sarah.frank@uky.edu) by July 15, 2008. Send job announcements to the RSS Business Office (ruralsoc@missouri.edu).
