Rural Studies Series
Challenges for Rural America in the Twenty-First Century, ed. by David L. Brown and Louis E. Swanson was named an Outstanding Academic Title of 2004 by CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries.
Challenges for Rural America in the Twenty-First Century is part of the Rural Sociological Society's Rural Studies Series. All the contributing editors are Rural Sociological Society members.
Irving E. Rockwood, editor and publisher of CHOICE, notes, "This year's Outstanding Academic Title list included 644 books and electronic resources chosen by the Choice editorial staff from among the 7,539 titles reviewed by Choice during the past year. These outstanding titles have been selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as important-often the first-treatment of their subject. Titles named to the list comprise less than 10 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less than 3 percent of the 23,000+ titles submitted to Choice during this same period. Outstanding Academic Titles are truly the 'best of the best'. As always, only a select group of publishers and authors are represented on such a list. Congratulations to you and your colleagues on this outstanding achievement."

The Rural Sociological Society and Penn State University Press are working together to promote the scholarly analysis of rural social issues. We are looking for well-written and well-conceptualized manuscripts on a wide range of topics that are accessible to a broad readership. We are especially interested in manuscripts that address the connections between the local and global, the embeddedness of social structure and social processes in the organization of social space, and the integration of rural places in the emerging global system. We seek a diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches and encourage scholars from all the social sciences to submit book proposals for possible inclusion in the Rural Studies Series.
The Penn State/RSS relationship differs significantly from that of our previous relationship with Westview. First, Penn State University Press will not exercise independent veto power over manuscripts in the series. Peter Potter, our editor at Penn State University Press, will work closely with the members of the editorial board in the review and evaluation process. Second, Penn State University Press will take responsibility for the steps involved in turning an approved manuscript into final copy. On a case-by-case basis, the RSS Publications will provide assistance for authors who needs funds to produce their manuscript or who have special needs (e.g., the production of camera-ready copy of charts and graphs). In addition, Peter will be working closely with members of RSS to publicize and promote volumes in the Rural Studies Series. It is no longer absolutely necessary that a prospective author be a member of the Rural Sociological Society, but we hope that anyone who contributes to the Rural Studies Series will join RSS and become an active member of our scholarly community.
Our goal is to publish up to three volumes per year. Now is a golden opportunity to have your manuscript or prospectus considered for publication. When we receive a prospectus, a member of the Editorial Board and an outside scholar are asked to review it. If the reviews are generally favorable, the author will be asked to prepare a full manuscript taking into consideration the comments and suggestions of the reviewers. The full manuscript will then go out for review to a group of scholars that may overlap with the initial reviewers of the prospectus. Reviewers' comments will be sent to all members of the Editorial Board and to Peter Potter. Following the comments of the reviewers and the recommendations of the members of the Editorial Board, a decision will be made about publication. Penn State University Press will then begin the production of the manuscript recommended for publication.
