The Rural Sociologist Submissions

To submit copy for The Rural Sociologist: TRS publishes announcements, articles, commentary and letters that are relevant to concerns of the Society as space permits. Included are announcements of new books by RSS members, announcements for awards, meetings, etc., retirements, obituaries, and activities of members.

Submission of material for possible publication in The Rural Sociologist presumes transfer of all copyrights to RSS upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication.

Manuscript Style Requirements: The Rural Sociologist is a bi-quarterly publication of the Rural Sociological Society, distributed to all members of the society, and to non-members by subscription. It is designed to provide information and fresh perspectives on issues of importance to professional rural sociologists and to all readers interested in policies affecting rural life.

The editor of The Rural Sociologist is looking for papers that inform our readers and engage them in provocative discussion about issues of relevance to the discipline. Please follow the following writing style guidelines for submission.

  1. One letter quality copy must be sent with each submission (Plus a copy on floppy disk in Word 7.0 format, or in ASCII would be greatly appreciated). All copies, including abstract, footnotes, references, and appendices should be double spaced. Papers should be thoroughly checked for misspellings and grammatical errors, and should not exceed 10 pages. Email attachments are acceptable.

  2. Submitted papers should include a title sheet, complete with the name(s) of the author(s) and an address for further communication. Papers should also include an ABSTRACT of not more than 150 words, but it will not be published with the paper.

  3. Submissions should not contain footnotes within the body of the text. Brief endnotes are acceptable. However, notes should only be used to elucidate material not fully explained in the text or tables.

  4. Required tables should be printed on separate sheets, and enclosed, following all endnotes. Notify editors of appropriate position of tables within the text (e.g. Table one about here).

  5. References should be presented following the endnotes in alphabetical order. Please use the format demonstrated below.
