Cellular Agriculture in Southern Africa: What Does It Mean for Rural Justice? Robert Chiles*, Robert Chiles,
Post-apartheid, South Africa and its neighbors continue to struggle with the triple burden of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Given that much of Southern Africa remains heavily dependent on livestock for livelihoods, nutrition, and social reproduction, the emergence of cellular agriculture technologies in this region (2020 – present day) could have profound socioeconomic consequences. In this talk, I will share the results of my interview, focus group, and fieldwork on the current state of the cellular agriculture sector in Southern Africa, stakeholder interpretations of this technology, and potential pathways towards economic inclusion (or exclusion) in this industry. I will conclude by reflecting on the broader implications for rural justice more generally.
