The Elders Research and Interest Group A lifetime of rural sociology—and still talking about it
What We’re About
The Elders RIG exists to celebrate the wisdom, wit, and contributions of long-standing members of the Rural Sociological Society—while embracing the lighter side of academic life. We provide a space for reflection, support, storytelling, and connection among RSS members who have traveled many seasons through the fields of rural sociology.
Our mission is simple: honor experience, preserve institutional memory, and have a little fun doing it. Whether you’re newly “elder-curious” or fully emeritus, The Elders RIG welcomes those who enjoy looking back on their academic journeys as much as they look forward to mentoring the next generation.

What We Do and How to Get Involved
The Elders RIG brings together RSS members who appreciate the value of experience, humor, and camaraderie in academic life. We:
Host an annual session (often with a strong dose of storytelling and subtle wisdom) at the RSS Annual Meeting.
Provide gentle and not-so-gentle reminders that rural sociologists, like fine cheese and old tractors, improve with age.
Offer informal mentorship and conversation to younger scholars—when we’re not too busy exchanging stories, planning the next adventure, or misplacing our reading glasses.
Serve as living archives and sometimes mischievous sages within the RSS community.
To get involved, self-identify as an Elder (chronologically, spiritually, or aspirationally) and attend our business meeting and sessions at the RSS Annual Meeting. No dues, no stress—just shared history, collegiality, and maybe a few jokes that only make sense after 30 years in the field.
