Richelle Winkler, John Cromartie, and Katherine Curtis publish report for the USDA Economic Research Service
Richelle Winkler (Professor of Sociology and Demography at Michigan Technological University), John Cromartie (recently retired from the USDA Economic Research Service), and Katherine Curtis (Director of the Center for Demography and Ecology and Professor or Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) recently published a report for the USDA Economic Research Service, along with their colleague Justin Winikoff. Titled “Migration and Aging Across the Rural-Urban Continuum,” the report studies migration and aging patterns across U.S. counties from 1990 to 2020 using data from the 2020 Census, Demographic and Housing Statistics. The report finds that that population aging in the 2010s was driven almost entirely by aging in place, rather than migration, like in previous decades.
