SAFRIG Student Paper Award Recognizing excellence in student research on food and agriculture
Award Overview
Recognizes an exceptional student-authored paper that advances understanding of food and agricultural systems through innovative research and meaningful contributions to rural sociology. The award honors scholarly excellence, methodological rigor, and the potential of the research to inform policy, practice, and future scholarship related to food, agriculture, and rural communities.
Complete paper submissions will be reviewed by a panel of SAFRIG members and will receive comments from panel members on their paper, which may be helpful for revisions if they choose to submit their paper to a journal.
Eligibility
- Paper focuses on a food and/or agriculture-related topic
- Paper is authored solely by a student or group of students (no faculty co-authors)
- Current member of the Rural Sociological Society (RSS)
- Student winner may have presented the paper the year before OR will present the year of the award
Requirements
- Paper must follow Rural Sociology journal formatting guidelines, including a maximum of 8,000 words excluding references and 9,500 words total.
- Papers may be under review at a peer-reviewed journal but may not have been accepted for publication or previously published.
- Papers demonstrating innovative theories, methods, and/or attention to unique geographic, cultural, or political contexts will be particularly competitive.
- Authors must follow RSS Ethics Guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scholarly writing.
- AI may not be used to develop the intellectual content of the paper or generate citations/references.
- Authors must disclose any permitted use of AI, such as grammatical or editorial review.

- Recognition at the SAFRIG business meeting
- Complimentary registration to the annual meeting
- $250 in Award Funds
