Eileen Avery publishes article in the International Journal of Rural Criminology
Eileen Avery, associate professor of sociology at the University of Missouri, recently published an article with coauthor Katelynn Towne in the International Journal of Rural Criminology. Titled “More Similar than Different? Perceptions of Procedural Justice in Rural and Urban Context in Missouri After Ferguson,” the article addresses a gap in policing research regarding rural areas. Using a state-wide dataset, Avery and Towne examine the associations between nonmetropolitan residence, local structural disadvantage, neighborhood perceptions, individual demographics, and experiences with crime and law enforcement on perceptions of procedural justice during the charged long-term aftermath surrounding the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
