Abstract
Introductory Sociology textbooks dedicate chapters to studying stratification by race, class, gender and sex, immigration status, and more, but rarely is there a chapter on rural-urban stratification and urbanormativity. In the current political climate, regional stratification is a less politically-charged category of difference but it still allows for critical analysis of stratification. I present here four teaching methods designed to encourage students to develop a rural Sociological Imagination, to understand the impact of power and inequality in society, to use empathy to understand the connections between individual troubles and structural problems, and to search for solutions.
