From Coshocton to Collie: Coal-transitioning communities across US and Australia Jeffrey Jacquet*, Jeffrey Jacquet,
Communities across the globe are grappling with the closure and retirement of coal mines and coal-fired power stations. Direct impacts include significant loss of employment that result in lowered economic activity and government expenditures, as well as cultural and social impacts as entrenched social patterns and ways of life are altered. Using a collection of case studies from across the US and Australia, this presentation compares the coal phase out across the two countries, drawing comparisons and contrasts that variously stem from differences in policy, economics, culture, and geography. Best practices from both countries can be shared and help to illustrate the key challenges and opportunities facing other coal transitioning communities in these countries and around the world.
