Markets of the Middle and Transforming Food Systems
Abstract
In the last 25 years, alternative food system networks have both 1) focused attention to the negative impacts of global agrifood commodity chains for farmers, communities and ecologies, AND 2) demonstrated innovative and creative ways of reweaving and revisioning fair, equitable and ecological ways of feeding ourselves now and into the future. In this sense, the seeds of the future are planted, and whatever blooms will bear the imprint of the models we are making and remaking in the present. As the thinkers who initiated “Agriculture and Food of the Middle” posited, farmers and food businesses of the middle – too big for direct markets, too small for global supply chains – face particularly difficult ‘squeezes’ and need to build values-based value chain partnerships that share risks and rewards. While we have seen positive developments in this arena, the economic and political power accumulated and often exercised by global agrifood players across the agrifood supply chain creates an unequal playing field that constantly erodes these footholds. This paper explores opportunities for revisioning policies and practices that can shape fairer, more equitable and more robust “markets of the middle.” What does it look like to simultaneously rein in the power of the largest players while supporting robust alternatives?
