Exploring rural America using the 2025 ERS County Typology Codes Austin Sanders*, Austin Sanders,
The USDA Economic Research Service has produced its County Typology Codes since the 1980s as a tool to communicate the diversity of economic, demographic, and social conditions across rural America to policymakers, researchers, and the general public. Drawing from ongoing research on the historical development of the Codes, current conditions in rural counties by county type, and considerations for future updates to the Codes, this poster features descriptive analyses of unique trends and conditions by county type that deepen our understanding of how policy contexts vary across rural America. The poster is intended to engage data users and researchers from across the country in discussions about broad, policy-relevant conditions that can be used to highlight the diversity of rural America’s communities today and going forward.
