Where and How are Conservation Agronomists Represented Across the Corn Belt Region?
Abstract
Conservation agronomists (CAs) constitute an emerging profession focused on increasing agricultural productivity while addressing soil, water, nutrient, and habitat loss stemming from agricultural production. CAs work within both private companies (e.g., agricultural retailers and co-operatives) and non-profit organizations (e.g., conservation NGOs, commodity trade associations) and act as advisors to farmers and landowners, helping them implement and expand use of conservation practices on their land. With this poster, I will present the first stage of a foundational research project on the CA profession, which focuses on the geographic nature of the profession: where are CAs located across the Corn Belt region and what areas do they service; how and where are the for- and non-profit sectors represented within the profession; and what conservation priorities do different CAs focus on? Data for this study will come from internet sources and interviews with CAs, and findings will be visualized into maps using GIS tools. Because there is little prior research on the CA profession, geographic representation of the nature and scope of the profession is important to establish a working base of scholarship on the topic and to provide direction for future research.
