Robert Francis publishes article in the Journal of Rural Studies

Robert Francis, associate professor of sociology at Whitworth University, recently published an article in the Journal of Rural Studies. Titled “A crisis of self-worth? Constructing meaning amidst economic displacement among rural, working-class men in America,” the article focuses on labor markets for men lacking a college degree and “blue-collar” employment opportunities in rural America. Francis uses primary data from a sample of white, working-class men in rural Pennsylvania to understand how employment in this context is tied to self-worth and community building, focusing on Lamont’s “plurality of criteria of worth.”
