Applied and Extension Research and Interest Group Bridging rural sociology and real-world practice
What We’re About
The Applied and Extension Research Interest Group connects scholars, students, and professionals who are committed to applying rural sociological knowledge in real-world contexts to make tangible, meaningful change. We focus on building strong, lasting bridges between academic research and practical solutions that strengthen rural communities, enhance organizational effectiveness, and address complex social challenges faced in diverse settings.
Our members work in a wide range of applied environments—including extension programs, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, private consulting firms, and community development initiatives—to ensure that rural sociology delivers an impactful, hands-on contribution. By sharing experiences and strategies, we help make research more accessible and relevant, supporting practitioners and policymakers working to improve rural life. We welcome all who are passionate about translating knowledge into action to join us in this collaborative effort.
